Carlsbad Community Festival

The Carlsbad Community Festival had been in the works for a few weeks before we realized that it was planned for the exact date marking the two-year anniversary of the death of Emery Kauanui Jr., a local surfer murdered in La Jolla, California. God clearly had a bigger and better plan for this outreach event than we did.

More than 1,000 people showed up at the Carlsbad Lagoon on Memorial Day, 2009, to celebrate Emery’s life. The action-packed day included demos from several Livin It® Alliance members:

  • A BMX demo by Vic Murphy/StuntDudes
  • A skateboard demo by Boarders For Christ
  • A wakeboard demo
  • Five talented bands
  • Celebrity MC Sonny from P.O.D.
  • A screening of Walking On Water's surf film, Beyond the Dream

Four local news stations were there to cover the event.

Emery's mom, Cindy Kauanui, and brothers Caleb and Nigel were the guests of honor. Caleb is one of the best graffiti artists in the world. He created an amazing mural of his brother Emery and also gave the kids an opportunity to test their artistic talents on their own mini mural.

Nigel is a talented hip-hop artist. He performed two songs in memory of Emery and was accompanied by his very talented breakdancers. Miles McPherson from the Rock Church did an incredible job sharing the Gospel with the crowd who had already been very impacted by Emery and his family's story. Many came forward to receive Christ!

We want to thank Miles Ahead, all the local churches, and Brett "Bird" Matson for doing such an incredible job organizing and promoting the outreach.

Motor City Skate Ministry

On November 15th, Livin It helped sponsor an event put on by Motor City Skate Ministry. The event was a skate competition and fundraiser for a family in the area. Uriel Luebcke brought his testimony and the gospel to the crowd and several adults and youth accepted Christ. Praise the Lord!
